Safe – Recently, Byte Back was thoroughly vetted. We won Honorable Mention for the 2010 Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management (arguably the highest award for a nonprofit organization) from the Center for Nonprofit Advancement. We were selected for inclusion in the 2010-2011 Catalogue for Philanthropy, which is a collection of the best small charities in the Washington region.

Cost-effective – Since our instructors are volunteers, we provided life-changing computer training to over 1000 students in FY10 with a budget under $500,000. It costs us only $327 to provide our 12-part computer literacy course and $654 to provide a full year of job training per student. This includes instruction in MS Office, teaching job readiness skills, assistance with individual job placement and a refurbished computer for graduates.

Transformative – Jobs obtained by previously unemployed students pay $11.80 on average – a living wage. Seventeen percent (17%) of employed graduates obtain salary increases due to their new skills. Byte Back job placements include the World Bank and the U.S. House of Representatives.

Supported by the community – The community recognizes the need for Byte Back services and invests their time and resources to make Byte Back services available to the disadvantaged in Washington. We have formal relationships with the following groups:

We received government grants and contracts through:

  • DC Public Library, the DC Department of Employment Services, the Office of Latino Affairs, ANC 5C, and the Office of the Chief Technology Officer.
  • Community groups provided their computer labs, free of charge, to Byte Back: First Time Computers, Southeast Ministry, Neighbors United, Mayfair Mansions, Jubilee Housing, Perry School Community Services, Catholic Charities, Academy of Hope, and Coalition for Economic Empowerment.
  • Businesses including Booz Allen Hamilton, Trinity University and the Federal Communications Bar Association send volunteers to Byte Back.
  • Companies such as CVS, VariQ and Starbucks offer special hiring opportunities for our graduates.
  • Cricket Communications gives free Internet to many of our graduates.
