Teach

Teachers are the very backbone of Byte Back. All our instructors and assistant instructors are volunteers. Some are AmeriCorps volunteers, some are experienced office workers, some are high level IT professionals and some are Byte Back graduates who wish to give back to the community.

One of our key goals at Byte Back is to offer deeply meaningful experience for our volunteers, including training, professional development opportunities, and socializing and networking events. We also work with corporations and businesses which may wish to organize a group of volunteer teachers and assistant teachers as a way of building up a team spirit.

Every month, Byte Back offers A Taste of Byte Back, a volunteer orientation event. This generally takes place on the fourth Wednesday of each month, unless it conflicts with a holiday, in which case it usually takes place on the third Wednesday. Check our calendar to confirm the date.

The Taste of Byte Back is from 6pm-8pm and includes refreshments — usually delicious pastries. This event consists of:

6:00-6:15  Welcome and introduction to Byte Back

6:15-6:45  Overview of teaching at Byte Back: including training opportunities, curriculum and materials, partnerships, scheduling, attendance and testing. This segment concludes with a tour of the building.

6:45-8:00  Teacher Training: Professional development workshops which rotate between “Best Practices in Adult Education,” “Challenges in the Classroom,” and “Special Topics.” The Special Topics workshops include subjects such as: “Meeting the Needs of Senior Citizens,” ” Working with Our Veterans,” and “Teaching Students with Mental Illness.” The Teacher Training sessions are open to all Byte Back teachers who wish to improve their effectiveness in the classroom.

If you are interested in volunteering as a teacher or assistant teacher, or if you would like to attend the next Taste of Byte Back, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Ms. Betty Benningfield at (202) 529-3395 or bbenningfield@byteback.org .
